I have children that attend the new Cortland Elementary School. I just found out about the poisoned ground and air at the school on Friday. It is now Sunday and I have been frantic all weekend. I want to take the children out but my husband wants numbers of the H2S. I need to justify my transferring or keeping them at home. Please can you give me H2S levels? Or someones valued opinion to speak to? Am I over reacting?
I have spoken to other parents about HS2 but no one has even heard of the gas or the expansion.
Thank You.

We don’t have exact numbers on the H2S, but the Chemist testified on Thursday that the current flame plume at the landfill that is supposed to be venting off the harmful gas isn’t working how it’s supposed to be. I personally sent an email to the President of the DeKalb School Board demanding air quality testing asap in light of recent events and haven’t received a reply. I would suggest that every parent who’s child attends Cortland Grade School contact the school board and demand air quality testing performed by a third party testing company of the School District’s choosing at Waste Management’s expense. If WM picks the testing place, the results will be skewed. Also a copy of the air quality test results need to go to the IL EPA. Please contact your school board and district admin staff asap and demand this be done.

Also, the reason the expansion is being kept quiet in Cortland is because the Cortland Village board is getting a million dollar payout to the village, along with a $30K donation to the fire dept., and a $1 per house rebate on garbage services not to fight the expansion. Your mayor has sold you all out! You all need to contact your Mayor and express your feelings on this. He is selling the Town of Cortland down the river!

The retired chemistry professor is the person who said the H2S levels are probably high enough to cause danger. However the way I understand it is that it takes exposure for a long period of time. We have asked the school district to require Waste Management to hire an independent third party to test the air quality at the school to make sure it is safe. We are also looking into having someone test the air quality as soon as possible so we know for sure. One thing is certain if the expansion is approved there will be more H2S in the air than now. I hope this helps. I am sorry for the fear you are experiencing. Hopefully we will be able to get the facts as soon as possible. I would suggest you call or send an email to Mr. Verbic of the School Board and urge them to have the air quality tested. Dan Kenney

Is there a way that we can have our kids xferred to a different school? My husband and I are very worried abt this and something needs to be done so that our child and other children’s health are not at risk. Shame on the district for putting the school there when there was plenty of land on Cortland center rd and somonauk to build the school there.

The county board members dont care becaus if you look at their locations none are listed in Cortland so they don’t have to live near it

This is not good for anyone that lives in the surrounding areas. This will contaminate our land, water, air, and roads. Even if can’t see the dump from your home contaminates can still make it into your GW and increased trucking ruin the aesthetics and air quality of our appealing farming communities. Comming from a person with a civil engineering degree this is a terrible terrible thing!!!

I noticed, while taking some pics out there today, that what I think are testing and monitoring wells are predominately on the South side of I-88. Does anyone know how many are on the North side?

I thought I had heard in the public hearing there was, but I’ll inquire more about that.

The monitoring wells are only on Waste Management Property. There are no monitoring wells North of I-88.
